Build Breakdown

A Midnight Opal Turned Full Drag Car

Midnight Opal was the quietest of the 2014 R35 specials: fifty cars in a deep purple that reads near-black until sun lands on a flank, and almost every one of them still lives under a cover on a trickle charger. This one took the other road entirely, and the screen in photo 3 reads 1,532.3 hp and 1,037.8 lb-ft, which is not a figure anybody reaches with a cat-back and a drop-in filter. The long block is the serious part, Manley 300M rods and Diamond pistons inside the VR38, Kelford 231-D cams up top, and Boost Logic's 1500X 67mm turbos feeding a 12-injector manifold with a Visconti triple pump behind them.

A GR6 turns into a consumable at that torque, so the transmission carries a PPG HD gearset, a Jacks 18-plate clutch pack and a billet front differential braced against the case, which is the part of this build that separates a car that makes 1,532 hp once from one that makes it over and over. The seller says the work was done by Tobz Performance with Kevin McGee on the calibration, and the engine bay in the photographs supports the claim: the plenum and intakes are coated in a purple that matches the paint, the catch cans are plumbed rather than draped, and the loom sits where somebody put it. What stands now is a dedicated strip car, 15-inch rear conversion with beadlocked 15x12 rears on 325 ET Street Rs, the seller counting 4,500 miles on the engine and 300 on the transmission. The R35 earned its reputation on a hand-assembled VR38 and a dual-clutch that launches like nothing else sold with a warranty, and what this car does is strip the compromise out of that recipe; against it, the Midnight Opal badge is the least interesting thing about the machine.
